Below are the areas of opportunities available in the Allen Lee Hughes Fellowship Program. Arena Stage does not offer any training opportunities in acting.

Arts Administration
Marketing – assist with the implementation of creative audience-building initiatives; design and implement grassroots marketing efforts; assist with tracking sales reports; provide administrative support.

Media Relations – assist with the creation and compilation of materials for press packets; implement strategies to garner coverage of Arena Stage productions and programs; track media coverage; provide administrative support.

Development – assist in all areas of fundraising, including individuals, corporations and foundations; draft grant proposals and donor correspondence; research prospective donors; assist with the preparation and implementation of special events; provide administrative support.

Managing Director – work on special projects in support of the managing director, including budget analysis, contract development, board relations, and corporate and foundation research; attend senior staff, board, and committee meetings.

Finance and Human Resources – assist with budget tracking, accounts payable, and cash receipts; support HR office in employee benefits, worker’s compensation, and employee relations; assist with recruitment, including advertising, interviewing, and checking references; provide administrative support.

Artistic Opportunities
Directing – observe and assist the director throughout the rehearsal period; attend production meetings; support the artistic process.

Dramaturgy/Literary Managementtrack, review and critique scripts; draft correspondence; conduct research for productions; prepare actor packets; provide administrative support.

Company Management – assist the company manager in the daily operations of the production department. This is an opportunity to gain experience in working with union contracts as well as general theatrical management of the theater’s season.

Producing/Casting- assist the associate artistic director and the casting director. This is an opportunity to gain experience in artistic development, contracts, line producing, casting, and artist-theater relations.

New Play Producing: Join the Artistic Development Team as part of the American Voices New Play Institute. > The New Play Producing Fellowship is an opportunity to gain experience in producing new plays from original impulse through opening night in a fast-paced and exciting environment. The Fellow will be paired with a Resident Playwright and produce all of their new play development activities, as well as other Arena Stage new play development activities, including convenings on hot topics in the national new play sector. In addition, the Fellow will complete an “externship” in another organization to expand their knowledge of new work.

technical production
Costumes assist the draper and first hand in making costumes; assist with shopping and pulling items from stock; run wardrobe crew. Applicants must have good sewing skills and a basic knowledge of costume history and vocabulary.

Lighting – work alongside some of the top lighting designers in the field. The lighting fellow acts as the resident assistant for all lighting designers during their residency at Arena Stage and assists the master electrician and staff electricians in planning, implementing and maintaining the lighting designs and systems. Applicants must have a basic knowledge of theatrical lighting, CAD drafting, common office software, and theatrical lighting equipment.

Stage Management – Selected applicants work as production assistants in support of the Equity stage management team for rehearsals, performances, and other related activities. The position works on one or more shows during the theater’s season.

community engagement opportunities
The Community Engagement division’s purpose is to build a future for the American theater by cultivating future theater professionals, attracting new audiences, and enriching theater education in the schools and in the community at large. Candidates must be committed to arts education and community involvement; applicants should be strong teachers, strong writers, theater artists and administrators. Additionally, candidates must have excellent communication skills, computer literacy, attention to detail, knowledge of theater and a passion for working with people.

In addition to programs listed in the description, season fellows also work closely with Moving Stories, Voices of Now, and Professional Development for Teachers, which provide experience in classroom teaching, workshop preparation and leading, program administration and community involvement.

Community Engagement Assist the Director of Education, Schools and Professional Development with administration of the Student Playwrights Project, which includes an in-school residency program, teacher training, master classes, a ten-minute play competition, and culminating performances. Successful candidate also serves as teaching artist-in-residence in one SPP residency classroom during the school year.

Education – Assist the Director of Education, Programming by providing administrative and artistic support for community outreach, Moving Stories, and Voices of Now. Act as coordinator for VON mentor ensemble and stage manager/co-facilitator for VON ensemble. Manage school partners who come to see Arena Stage shows through the D.C. Ticket Partnership; assist with student study guides and pre- and post-show visits. Serve as teaching artist-in- residence in one SPP classroom during the school-year.
